We are lucky to have a big house, in our big house is a huge Yellow Room above our garage that houses vintage goodies for the shop, my fabric, cutting table, yarn (lots of yarn) and all sorts of crafting supplies. But it is freezing up there in the winter so I wind up occupying a little corner of our dining room during these cold months. Aside from most of my yarn, right there in that one little corner, is pretty much everything I need
to just get to it when inspiration strikes.
I am a huge lover of old crates. Remember the blueberry shelves? Well, there are old crates and troughs all over my house corralling books, supplies, toys etc. This is not the best way to store fabric since it's a pain to sort through and it can be hard to find the one I am looking for if it gets sandwiched between other heavier fabric. Also, despite a really good cleaning this particular crate is a Railroad crate so some dirt can rub off if you aren't careful removing fabric. But, it works as a temporary solution.
The vintage Travel Joy Train Case is one of my favorite luggage finds. I have sold a lot of luggage in the shop but some pieces I can't let go of. This is one of them. It holds all of my knitting supplies, needle rolls, tapestry needles, stitch markers, scissors, measuring tape etc. and it even has room for a WIP or two. That makes it nice and portable if I move from room to room or even to the car! I really love train cases for that use. And they are so pretty! There is quite a chaotic mess in there but you'd never know it.
The chair is one I found at a junk shop and recovered (with Stacey) and Mr. Keeler is an old soul from Albany, NY not too far away who made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in the 1800's. We hang portraits in our dining room and while he was never meant to be a permanent resident, I can't seem to bid him farewell so for now he looks sternly down on my sewing machine making sure it doesn't misbehave too badly. Oddly, my car just had to spend a week at Keeler motors in Albany but I just made the connection now looking at the picture! The sewing table is Greg's Grandmother's and houses the most beautiful old Singer machine. It works really well but needs to be rewired so it stays tucked in for the time being.
Despite my best efforts though, the 'creative piles' spill all over the house like I am sure they do for most of us. That is when huge, and I mean huge baskets come in handy! Like this one, that I can pile yarn or projects into and then just place them on the floor or in another room for the time being. Just in case we want to, you know, eat at the dining room table! What a novel idea! This basket is probably 2 1/2-3 feet! The green string is for when you feel like pretending you are a turtle.
Right now it is holding on to the Sweater Blanket in Progress. Which I've decided to put on hold until I can find a few more sweaters to make it a bit bigger. But, I am really itching to sit down at that little sewing table in my little corner and get to work on it. Guess I should go out now and look for another sweater or two. Cross your sticks and fingers for me!
